It was dirty. The tires were rotten. Panels were rusting from the inside out. It was delightfully awful, and I loved the roughness of it all. The sight of this Series II Morris Minor sparked an idea and in 2018 I finally decided to combine my photographic passions with my passion for automobiles. Patina Coast was born - a photography service where a vehicle is approached as a whole before the field of vision is narrowed in order to focus on individual components. Patina references the customizations that differentiate one Ford Galaxie 500XL from another Ford Galaxie 500XL. One MGB GT from the next. Faded paint, dents, cracked steering wheels, custom exhausts, pitted chrome or scars from a recent rally. Coast references the area we’re from. The roads we follow. I feel pride when I revisit my own classic car through a full set of photos and I feel joy. The memories they rekindle range from late night wrenching sessions to epic drives through the Annapolis Valley. They help me remember the exhaust note on an autumn morning or the tick-tick-tick of the analog clock before the key is turned in the ignition.
